MLK Jr. Day of Service 2021

What do you get when you cross a college honor society devoted to service in the community with a woman on a mission to equalize the playing field for schoolchildren learning online during a pandemic? Inspiration! On Monday, January 18th, 2021, ten college students and a faculty advisor from Cape Fear Community College, representing Phi Theta Kappa honor society got together with Rebecca Trammel to learn the Jerusalema dance. Spirits were high as the dancers mastered the line dance and took it — quite literally — to the streets. They headed down to the 1898 memorial, shot some video and pictures at 3rd and Davis Streets in front of the murals there, and then paraded on over to the Jervay Park “Black Lives Do Matter” installation. It was an exciting and fun day filled with the spirit of creativity and purpose.

Within the subsequent four months. the dancers assisted Rebecca at various after school programs to teach children the dance, including the Community Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington, Voyage, the Brigade Boys and Girls Club, and the YWCA. “Dream and Dance with PTK” was just the start of an idea to bring joy to children in the midst of a chaotic year that included a global pandemic and protests over the death of George Floyd and other people of color.

Since the power of human connection through dance has proven to be a great catalyst for something bigger that has an even greater impact, Dream and Dance is now The Jerusalema ILM Challenge, which will culminate in August 2021. Be a part of what’s to come by joining our mailing list!
